The second is the rate of EV sales growth is slowing, at least temporarily. The EV market is not collapsing, experts say, it’s just entering a new phase. Teslas still make up slightly more than half of all the electric vehicles sold in America, according to a report from Cox Automotive. But, just one year ago, Tesla produced more than 60% of all the EVs sold America. After having trouble cranking up production of its new generation of electric vehicles, GM seems to be accelerating.

In the 21st Century, though, Buick, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, has been a quiet spot in GM’s North American brand strategy. Last year, Buick sales rose more than 60% in the US compared to 2022. The Buick Envista introduced last summer is, essentially, a modified version of the well-received Chevrolet Trax, GM’s cheapest crossover SUV. The 1938 Buick Y Job is generally considered the auto industry's first "concept car." Last year, Avenir models, which get some fancier interior materials, more features, and distinctive paint colors, made up almost a third of Buick sales, the highest levels yet, Aldred said.

Whatever happened to the two-door car?

There are still two-door cars today, of course, but they’re almost all high-performance sports cars not intended for comfortable cruising. For car designers, two-door models can offer more striking proportions to play with, long hoods that evoke power and tapered, aerodynamic back ends. Today, it’s rare to see a two-door car that isn’t a performance model like the Mustang or Corvette. Today, if you have a two-door car and you have kids, you also have a backache. While some two-door cars used to be bargain items – the cheapest entry-level cars were almost always two-door hatchbacks – today two-door models are seen mostly in European luxury car showrooms.

EV sales growth has been slowing for a while but in the last two quarters, EV sales didn’t increase much at all, according to estimates from Cox Automotive. “Looking at the data, the big [EV] slowdown is shaping up to be a Tesla slowdown,” said Valdez Streaty. Last year, Tesla sales were up 38% compared to 2022, but investors had expected more. While that’s much less than the roughly 80% of EV sales Tesla accounted for in 2019, according to Edmunds.com, it’s still a majority. But, if you leave out Tesla, sales of other electric vehicles, as a group, were up 33%.

Buick was the only GM brand to report a sales increase during the quarter, up 16.4% from a year earlier. GM reported sales of its full-size pickups totaled roughly 197,000 units, up 3.6% from a year earlier, during the first quarter – marking their best performance during that time since the first quarter of 2020.

Concerns about the impact of the Baltimore bridge collapse on auto imports and exports are beginning to ease as car companies turn to other ports along the East Coast. On Thursday, Cox Automotive, a market researcher, said it expected the situation in Baltimore to have no material impact on vehicle sales in the United States. “While Baltimore is the top port for auto shipments, this is not likely to cause or create a sudden new problem in vehicle supply that will materially impact the market,” Jonathan Smoke, Cox’s chief economist, said in a conference call. “The port is heavy for exports and imports, but there are alternatives.”Mercedes-Benz said it has already found other ways of handling the vehicles it usually imports from Germany through Baltimore.

The rise of BYD and other Chinese automakers led Tesla CEO Elon Musk in January to warn that Chinese automakers will "demolish" global rivals without trade barriers. Caresoft, an engineering benchmarking and consulting firm, has already torn down one China-built BYD Seagull and is preparing to do another. Michael Wayland / CNBCThe consulting firm tore apart the BYD Seagull piece by piece to benchmark the small EV against vehicles from other startups and traditional automakers. Its initial study of the BYD Seagull found it to be efficiently and simplistically designed, engineered and executed, but with unexpected quality and anticipated reliability. Growing concernsBYD's rise comes at a precarious time for global auto industry dynamics.

Those more concerned with the climate crisis are asking a bigger question: what does this all mean for the planet? Gas-powered cars, hybrids and EVs all emit roughly the same amount of pollution to manufacture, until you get to producing the battery. Fully electric cars use large batteries made of materials that require heavy mining. And that would still mean less climate pollution on the road overall. And fully electric cars won’t be truly “green” until the energy that charges them comes from renewable sources, like wind and solar.

The bill, a key part of US President Joe Biden's economic agenda, offers tax credits worth up to $7,500 for EV makers, excluding any "Foreign Entity of Concern." BYD isn't the only company turning its back on the US EV market. Given that EV sales growth is stalling in US, it's perhaps little wonder companies like BYD are not too bothered.

New cars are more available this spring, and manufacturers have even begun offering deals to entice buyers. But at the same time, lenders have been tightening the terms of car loans as they deal with a rising number of delinquencies. That has made it harder for some people to get affordable loans. The impact was seen at banks, credit unions and dealerships. “We are seeing credit access tighten in all channels,” said Sean Tucker, a senior editor at Kelley Blue Book, Cox’s car research and sales website.

Toyota, the originator of the hybrid car craze in the early 2000s, is poised to reclaim its crown as the king of green cars. This, paired with the success of Tesla and overall investor enthusiasm for EV technology, left Toyota looking like a laggard. Shoppers in the market for a hybrid are also much more likely to pony up more cash for these cars. Toyota has spent the last several years releasing more hybrids and plug-in hybrids, while refusing to give up on the nascent hydrogen fuel cell technology that many of its competitors have largely abandoned.

EY's Daco said the past few years have been marked by a mismatch in supply and demand when it comes to goods, services and even workers. Companies furloughed workers in the early pandemic and then struggled to fill jobs. David Silverman, a retail analyst at Fitch Ratings, said companies are "feeling a bit heavy as sales growth moderates and maybe even declines." Cost cuts at UPS, Hasbro and Levi all followed sales declines in the most recent fiscal quarter. "Part of companies' decision to lower their expense structure is in line with their views that 2024 may not be a fantastic year from a top-line-growth standpoint," Silverman said.
